Oranjemund – 7 May 2024 – The town of Oranjemund marks an historic event with the inauguration of its new fire station, celebrating the occasion on the same day as International Firefighters Day. This significant event, officiated by Hon. Erastus Uutoni, Minister of Urban and Rural Development, reflects the commitment to public safety and the recognition of the selfless service provided by firefighters.

The new fire station was constructed with the support of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, which funded the Oranjemund Town Council with N$ 3 million Namibian dollars, complemented by an additional N$ 9.5 million Namibian dollars from the Council’s budget. This collective investment signifies a robust commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Oranjemund’s residents.

“In terms of section 2(2) and (3) Local Authorities Fire Brigade Services Act, 2006, the Government through the Minister responsible for local government matters has a duty to provide subsidies to enable local authorities to establish and operate fire brigade services that have the technical and personnel capacity to effectively prevent and deal with emerging fire incidents and other emergencies. In keeping with this legal obligation, the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has developed a Local Authorities Emergency Services Capacity Development Programme through which the Ministry provides various forms of support to local authorities in the area of fire and emergency response.” Hon Uutoni said during his address.

At the event HW, Cllr Elias Kasemba, Mayor of Oranjemund emphasized that the new fire station is more than just a structure; it represents Council’s commitment to safety, emergency preparedness, and community well-being. He further added that the unveiling of the new ambulance is to enhance Council’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, ensuring that help is always nearby when needed.

During the event, Hon Uutoni unveiled the new ambulance along with the new fire station, with the aim to strengthen its emergency response time and to enhance emergency medical response in Oranjemund while recognizing the important role firefighters play in our communities.
